Meet Teighan
A geologist, a renovator, a real estate agent, a restauranter; I’ve worn many hats, but somewhere between motherhood and the loss of a dear friend I finally began on my dream of writing for children.
I live in Newcastle, a beachside city two hours north of Sydney, with my husband, daughters and dogs. I believe in the magic of story telling to inspire curiosity and change. I am passionate about the environment, and love learning about new ways to exist sustainably. I am a travel enthusiast who can’t wait to show my children the wonders of this world. I have always loved getting outside my comfort zone! I’ve climbed volcanoes, swam with sharks and hang glided over cities. I have hiked to remote villages, jumped over waterfalls and horse backed through mountains. These experiences have inspired my stories and my love of planet earth. I hope that my books find a spot on your bookshelf, that they encourage some good family conversation and that they bring a little magic to the little loves in your life.
Following the death of a dear friend in 2019 I began writing because it helped me process some of the pain. That’s when my first book “Tom Shark” was born. I did nothing with it for quite some time, but the wonder of if I should, always niggled in the back of my mind. As time went on, motherhood filled my days. I was able to see the magic of the world through their eyes. Reading to them each day showed me that I had fallen in love with children’s literature all over again. The next story I wrote was “Where do you live?”. After that, I decided it was time to turn this dream into a reality. I spent the next 2 years learning all I could about this industry and completed a number of courses. I am so excited that I am now embarking on my career as a writer.
Throughout my entire school life I studied drama (and attended a performing arts high school) and I was always an avid story teller. I don’t know when exactly I decided to give up on my aspirations and follow what I thought was expected of me, but that’s what I did. I completed my science degree and regularly changed jobs as I struggled to find something that I felt excited about. My mother has always documented our lives in baby/childhood memory books. She recently dug up my kindergarten binder to show me. The question asked was “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. I had answered “write books”. Almost 30 years later I can FINALLY say “Here I am!”
